FAQ

The earliest examples of what we now call plantation shutters date back to the Ancient Greeks. These fixed window coverings would likely have been made from marble or similar, and were used to provide privacy, security and protection from the elements, while also allowing control over the light and air flow into the home. Later, wood was used to make these shutters accessible to the masses, and more versatile in terms of design and customisation. The trend for wooden shutters spread across Europe, eventually making its way to America with the Spanish, and became especially popular in the southern plantations - hence the name.

Plantation Shutters are available in either uPVC or natural basswood timber, with a variety of finish options to choose from.

Timber shutters can be finished in light cedar or pristine white, while uPVC offers a range of finishes to be chosen from.

In Australia, the Pristine White in the uPVC is the most common choice for homes as the white is bright and clean.

Each material has its own benefits in terms of aesthetics and practicality, but uPVC is better suited to high moisture areas and comes with a lifetime warranty.

The plantation shutters we offer are all custom made to suit the window casing.

Plantation blinds and shutters are popular because they both offer a blend of style and functionality. Though they have similarities, there are some key differences between the two. The terms "plantation blinds" and "plantation shutters" are often used interchangeably, as they both refer to window coverings with wide, adjustable horizontal slats for light and privacy control. However, the main difference lies in their material and construction. Plantation shutters are generally sturdier, made from materials like wood or PVC, and have a solid frame. On the other hand, plantation blinds are typically lighter, made from materials like faux wood or aluminium, and may not have the same level of durability and insulation as plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are attached to a frame with hinges to the window frame, allowing them to swing open like doors. Plantation blinds are usually hung using a headrail mounted inside or outside the window recess. The louvres in plantation shutters are adjusted using a tilt rod or hidden tilt mechanism, while the slats in plantation blinds are raised or lowered using a cord or wand mechanism. Additionally, you can lift plantation blinds all the way up, allowing for an unobstructed view.

The cost of plantation shutters can vary greatly depending on your chosen material and window or door size. Hardwood shutters made from high-quality timber are the most expensive option, while faux wood or composite shutters that mimic the appearance of natural wood are more affordable alternatives. Larger or unusually shaped windows or doors typically require custom-made shutters, increasing the cost.

Hardwood shutters can last over 20 years when well-maintained. These shutters offer natural beauty, strength, and insulation. However, they may be more susceptible to damage from moisture or extreme temperature changes, which can affect their lifespan. Faux wood and composite shutters are made from synthetic materials like vinyl, PVC, or MDF. They are designed to be moisture-resistant and less prone to warping or fading. These shutters typically have a lifespan of 15 to 25 years, depending on the quality and how well they are maintained.

The ability of plantation shutters to block out light depends on the size and fit of the shutters and the width of the louvres. Plantation shutters can effectively block out most light at night when closed, making them a popular choice for privacy and light control. However, they typically won't provide complete blackout conditions, as small gaps between the louvres or around the frame may still allow minimal light in. Choosing shutters with wider louvres can help minimise light gaps when closed.

Yes! Plantation shutters can increase the value of your home as they are often considered a desirable feature by potential home buyers. This is because of their timeless and elegant look that complements and enhances various home styles. The adjustable louvres of plantation shutters allow homeowners to easily manage the light entering a room while maintaining privacy. This versatility is appreciated by homebuyers and is one of the most attractive features of plantation shutters. Another big selling point of plantation shutters is their ability to improve a home's energy efficiency. They create a barrier between the window and the room, provide insulation that helps maintain comfortable indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. Since high-quality plantation shutters are designed to last many years, they are a long-term investment. Their durability is a selling point for buyers wanting low-maintenance and long-lasting window coverings.

Plantation shutters blend seamlessly with the classic architectural elements of traditional Colonial, Victorian, Queenslander, and Federation-style houses. In modern and contemporary style homes, plantation shutters provide a sleek and minimalistic look. Their clean lines also offer a streamlined appearance, making rooms feel more spacious. Coastal homes in Australia often feature plantation shutters, as they allow sea breezes in while maintaining privacy. Plantation shutters also perfectly complement the warm, cozy aesthetic of a cottage-style home. With customisable material finishes and colours, plantation shutters can match the design style of any house.

Typically no. But the answer to this question depends on your preferences and needs. Here are some things to keep in mind when making your decision. Aesthetic appeal is one consideration, as combining plantation shutters with curtains can create a layered and sophisticated look in a room. Curtains can introduce colour, texture, and pattern to complement the clean lines of the shutters and contribute to the overall design of the space. Light blocking is another factor to keep in mind. While plantation shutters can block most light when closed, small gaps between the louvres or around the frame might still allow some light in. If you require complete darkness, such as in a bedroom or home theatre, adding blackout curtains can help achieve total light control. Additional insulation can also be a reason to pair curtains with plantation shutters. Although shutters provide some insulation, pairing them with curtains can further increase energy efficiency by creating an extra barrier to reduce heat transfer through the windows.

Yes, you can install plantation shutters on windows with trim. Plantation shutters can be customised and mounted to suit different window trim styles, ensuring a proper fit and seamless integration with your existing décor. If your window trim is deep enough to accommodate the shutter frame, you can install an inside mount. The shutter frame is attached directly to the interior sides of the window opening, resulting in a clean and flush appearance. For this mounting option, your window trim must have sufficient depth and a flat surface to accommodate the shutter frame without obstructing the movement of the louvres. Alternatively, you can choose an outside mount installation if your window trim lacks depth or has an uneven surface. In this case, the shutter frame is mounted on the surface of the window trim or the architrave. This method accommodates a wider range of trim depths and window styles and can help conceal any inconsistencies in the window trim.

The clean, uniform appearance of plantation shutters can contribute to a more streamlined and spacious feel in a room. The colour white reflects light, so white shutters will help maintain a feeling of openness. Plus, adjusting plantation shutters to let in more natural light makes a space appear larger, while fully opening them allows for an unobstructed view of the outdoors, visually extending the room.

With their clean lines and minimal detailing, plantation shutters already have the ability to look modern. To enhance their modern look, choose larger louvres for a more streamlined appearance. Also, opting for neutral-coloured shutters with a matte finish will add to a contemporary feel. Focus on uncluttered interior spaces and choose surrounding furniture and décor with a modern aesthetic featuring minimalistic designs. By coordinating these design details, plantation shutters will blend seamlessly into a stylish, contemporary living space.

Yes, plantation shutters can help keep a room warmer. When the shutters are closed, they create a barrier that reduces heat transfer through the windows. The trapped air between the window and the room acts as an insulating layer. This insulation helps maintain a more comfortable indoor temperature and can lower heating costs. The effectiveness of plantation shutters in keeping a room warm depends on the shutters' material, fit, and quality. Wooden shutters, for example, have natural insulating properties, while composite or vinyl shutters may offer less insulation.
